More Than a Field

A summer thunderstorm rolls through western Pennsylvania.
By 10:00 in the morning, the rain has stopped. The clouds begin to part. Before long, the sun is shining.
Most people would assume it's a perfect day for baseball.
Years ago at Casey's Clubhouse, that wasn't always the case.
Our original pour-in-place playing surface became extremely slick when it got wet. Even after the rain ended, the field often remained unsafe for our athletes. More than once, what looked like a beautiful afternoon turned into a disappointing day of canceled games.
For our families, that meant much more than missing baseball.
It meant athletes who had been counting down all week wouldn't get to see their teammates. Volunteers who had rearranged work schedules wouldn't get to spend time with their buddies. Families who traveled from across western Pennsylvania and beyond would have to turn around and head home.
We knew there had to be a better way.
That realization led to one of the most important investments in Casey's Clubhouse history. One that many visitors never even notice.
More Than Just Turf

When Casey's Clubhouse decided to replace the playing surface, we weren't simply upgrading a baseball field.
We were investing in opportunities.
We wanted a field that would drain quickly after rain, provide consistent footing for athletes with mobility challenges, create smooth transitions for wheelchairs, and allow us to spend less time worrying about weather and more time making memories.
Today, our professionally installed synthetic turf allows us to get back on the field much sooner after rain and provides a safer, more reliable playing surface throughout the season. It also features innovative technology that can remain 20 to 25 degrees cooler than traditional synthetic turf during hot summer days, creating a more comfortable experience for athletes, volunteers, families, and fans.
Those improvements may not be the first thing visitors notice.
But they make thousands of unforgettable moments possible every year.
Accessibility Looks Different for Everyone
When people hear the word "accessible," they often picture a wheelchair.
Wheelchairs are certainly part of the story, but they're far from the whole story.
Accessibility means something different to every athlete who comes through our gates.
For one athlete, it's a smooth surface that allows them to independently make their way around the bases for the first time.
For another, it's consistent footing that builds the confidence to run without worrying about slipping.
For a volunteer buddy, it's the ability to safely walk beside their athlete from first pitch to the final out.
For parents, it's the peace of mind that comes from knowing every detail of the field was designed with safety in mind.
True inclusion isn't created by one feature.
It's created by hundreds of thoughtful decisions that work together so every athlete has the opportunity to succeed in their own way. That's the difference between building a baseball field and building a place where everyone belongs.
We're in the Memory-Making Business

At Casey's Clubhouse, we often say we're in the memory-making business.
Baseball is simply the vehicle.
Every decision we make, from the volunteers we recruit to the programs we create, is guided by one question.
Will this help create more unforgettable moments for our athletes and families?
Replacing the playing surface wasn't about installing new turf.
It was about hearing another athlete's name announced over the loudspeaker.
It was about one more game that didn't have to be canceled because of yesterday's rain.
It was about another volunteer walking side by side with their buddy.
It was about grandparents cheering from the stands.
It was about siblings laughing together.
It was about giving families another Saturday where disability wasn't the focus.
Joy was.
That vision has guided Casey's Clubhouse since day one.
As founder Sean Casey explains:
"As a professional athlete, I experienced firsthand the power of baseball to bring people together and create lifelong bonds. After retiring, I wanted to give back to my hometown by creating a space where individuals with disabilities could experience that same joy and connection. Casey's Clubhouse was born from a desire to build an inclusive community where everyone has the chance to play, grow, and feel like a part of something bigger."
Every improvement we make, including the field beneath our athletes' feet, is rooted in that vision.
More Than Baseball
One of our longtime supporters, whose family travels eight hours to be part of Casey's Clubhouse, said it best.
"Casey's Clubhouse is more than baseball. It is a gift, a community, and a reminder that true joy can be found in an old pastime...good, old-fashioned baseball."
As the parent of a son with special needs, she shared that Casey's Clubhouse changes the conversation from "How can they?" to "Of course they can."
That simple shift changes lives.
Not only for our athletes, but for parents, siblings, grandparents, volunteers, and everyone fortunate enough to witness it.
That's why families make the trip.
They're not simply coming for baseball.
They're coming for belonging.
Choosing the Right Partner

Finding the right playing surface meant finding the right partner.
When Casey's Clubhouse made the decision to install synthetic turf, we wanted a company that understood this wasn't just another baseball field.
Every decision would impact athletes with disabilities, their families, and the hundreds of volunteers who make our programs possible.
Playground Equipment Services became that partner.
From planning through installation, they helped create a field that has now served thousands of athletes and families while standing up to the demands of a busy season.
Over the years, that field has become the backdrop for countless memories.
First hits.
First home runs.
Championship celebrations.
Friendships that began in the dugout.
Families discovering a community that welcomes them exactly as they are.
What has impressed us just as much as the quality of their work is the relationship that has followed.
Since completing our field, Playground Equipment Services has continued to invest in Casey's Clubhouse by sponsoring a table at our annual fundraiser, participating in the Sean Casey Golf Classic, and supporting our mission long after the final piece of turf was installed.
That's what true partnership looks like.
It doesn't end when the project is complete.
It grows alongside the mission.
Protecting Something Special
One of the things that makes Casey's Clubhouse unique is that this field doesn't belong only to us.
When our programs aren't in session, the field is open for the community to enjoy.
We love seeing children playing catch, families spending time together, and neighbors making memories on the same field our athletes call home.
We simply ask everyone who visits to remember why this field was built.
Every wheelchair, every volunteer, and every athlete depends on this surface being safe and in excellent condition.
Please help us protect it.
Keep food, gum, sunflower seeds, and drinks other than water off the turf. Clean up after yourself. Report anything that appears damaged. Treat the field with the same care and respect you would if it were your own backyard.
Because in many ways, it is.
This field belongs to a community that believes every person deserves the opportunity to play.
Building the Next Chapter

As Casey's Clubhouse prepares for the largest expansion in our organization's history, we're excited to continue that partnership.
Our vision includes a second baseball field that will allow us to welcome more athletes, reduce waitlists, expand programming, and create even more opportunities for individuals with disabilities to experience the joy of sports and community.
When the time comes to install the turf on that second field, Playground Equipment Services will once again help bring that vision to life.
For us, that decision was an easy one.
When you've found a partner that understands your mission, delivers exceptional work, and continues to invest in your community year after year, you don't start over.
You build the future together.
The Foundation for the Future
The most memorable moments at Casey's Clubhouse don't begin with a swing of the bat. They begin the moment an athlete steps onto the field believing they belong.
The first field has already given thousands of athletes a place to chase their dreams.
With your support, the second field will give thousands more the opportunity to discover confidence, build friendships, create memories, and experience the joy that makes Casey's Clubhouse so special.
Because every great community is built on a strong foundation.
For us, that foundation is more than turf.
It's the belief that every person deserves the chance to play.
